Theme Description

The world of Okami takes place in an island nation called Nippon, which bears many resemblances to feudal Japan. Many legends are borne in this land, and many demons and beasts inhabit it alongside humanity. It is a period of transition, as the old Shinto religion struggles under the influx of Buddhism. Many of the old Shinto gods have lost strength as faith in them wanes, making way for many strong demons to infest the land, sea, and sky of Nippon. Faith in the old Shinto gods has waned so much in fact that most humans can no longer see the gods at all. They just see regular animals that they often feel compelled to talk to for no particular reason.
