The opening of the Gates went all but unnoticed. Few people knew of their existence, and those that did thought of them as little more than ancient relics. When they came online, few were around to witness the event, and fewer still had the courage to pass through to see what lay beyond. But when these explorers returned home, they brought with them news of a greater multiverse--a world linked together by the mysterious portals. The Gates themselves were remnants of a long-vanished civilization; no one knew who they were, and they came to be known as the Ancients.

Some societies kept the gates a closely-guarded secret, while others embraced them and the opportunities they offered. Eventually, powers from the planes came together to form the Interplanar League, a governing body that serves as a diplomatic forum for its members. The Interplanar Peacekeeping Agency is what keeps the League safe; it's one of its most integral divisions. However, the disgruntled, dictatorial and criminal elements among the planes didn't want the League cutting in on their territory--they formed the Syndicate to guard their own interests. Many people just want to be left alone to pursue their own goals without outside interference. All in all, it's a new age of possibility.
