Profile: Big Brother is the beloved friend and most intimidating menace for every citizen of Oceania, a tense, thick-mustached face staring from telescreens and posters everywhere, presiding over the Two Minutes Hate, announcing victories over the hated enemy abroad. He is the soul of Ingsoc, the jealous god of the gospel of doublethink, the death engine powering the police state, the primary originator of the Revolution who never faltered into corruption or betrayal; his visage has been seared into the mind of every Oceanian citizen. It is Big Brother who commissions the telescreen monitoring and the triumphant parades, who presides over the rations and victory gin distributed by the Ministry of Plenty, who dispatches the Thought Police to shut down subversives and systematically break them. None claim to have ever personally met Big Brother, and among dark, shadowed heretical circles, crimethinkers talk of him not as a person but a representation, a boot, stamping on a human face, forever. They have not learned the true lesson of Big Brother. The members of the Inner Party are those who have learned the lesson: that if you will only surrender yourself to the will of Big Brother, you, too, can learn to be part of the boot.
